Web 2.0
Web 2.0 is a much better and more interactive version of the world wide web. It has many new features like allowing people to communicate with each other. The ways that people do this is using web services such as Wikipedia. Wikipedia allows people to share information by creating pages on any subject. Kind of like a large encyclopedia. Hence the wiki-"pedia". Web 2.0 allows webpages to be more interactive with buttons and hyperlinks. This change also makes it easier to edit and develop better webpages that include images, videos and much more. Not only is Web 2.0 shared by the owners it is also shared across the world with other users. Social Media is another example web category that uses web 2.0 very efficiently and as technology develops and more people have smartphones, it is much more easier to access these types of web 2.0 sites. Web Storage Online digital storage companies such as Dropbox or Google Drive are also part of Web 2.0 as files and folders, images and videos are shared and stored on a physical server, which with the correct link, another user from across the other side of the world can access the information. Web storage eliminates theft, loss or damage to a USB/ External drive as Web storage does not need anything except your own personal computer/smartphone to send files over to the online storage. The positive is that you free up space for your personal devices, guaranteed security (depending on what service you use) and reliable. You are able to save, edit and delete files on your online storage 24/7 365.5 days a year. Worst case scenario is if the online storage is down for maintenance but this is very rare. Companies could pay the online storage for bigger storage space to backup all their important documents to prevent loss, damage or theft to their systems. Cloud Storage Cloud storage is similar to Web Storage, but this time it uses your computers hard drive to backup the data stored on it. With Windows 8 and up, you are able to place a Dropbox folder on your desktop. This enables you to place any files in there and back them up straight from your hard drive. This is so much easier rather than having to open up a web browser and login. You just place all your files into that Dropbox folder and it will automatically back them to to the cloud servers. In this case it will be the Dropbox Server. Dropbox is used the most in my opinion. It is quick and easy to use. If you want extra space, you would have to pay for extra storage on their servers, but they do give you free starting storage and ranges from 2 GB to 1 TB. Online Applications Online Applications like Microsoft Outlook for example, is an application where emails are made, sent and received. Online applications are online versions of the applications you would install on your computer. Sometimes these Online applications are free and do not need to be purchased. They are in a web form. This makes it more accessible to the users as they dont have to wait hours just to install one program depending on their ISP or internet speed. The negative side of using these online applications is that there can be times where you would have limited access to the features used on the web, whereas if you would install it on your computer, you would have the full range of features available to use. Blogs Blogs are basically web logs that can be commented on, like the one im currently writing. They can be in many forms and styles. People can give hints, ideas and even stories. Basically what ever they want to share over the internet about their lives or the lives of others. They can even argue on the Blogs.
